China's Phosphate Fertilizer Contaminating Soil with Cadmium, Urgent Regulation Needed.
Phosphate fertilizers used in Chinese agriculture can introduce cadmium (Cd) into the soil, which is harmful to the environment. A study looked at Cd input from phosphate fertilizers in China from 2006 to 2016. They found that Cd content in the fertilizers was 0.75 mg/kg, leading to an estimated 10.52 tons of Cd input in 2016. Most of this Cd came from DAP/MAP fertilizers. Excessive fertilizer use was observed in Xinjiang, Henan, and Hubei Provinces. This highlights the need to regulate phosphate fertilizer use in China, especially in these provinces.
