Nitrogen addition decreases root respiration, impacting soil CO2 levels.
The study looked at how adding nitrogen affects the release of CO2 from soil in a sandy grassland. They found that soil respiration and microbial respiration increased and then decreased during the growing season. Microbial respiration was the main contributor to soil respiration. Root respiration was more sensitive to nitrogen addition than microbial respiration. Overall, nitrogen addition increased the sensitivity of soil and microbial respiration to temperature changes and soil water content.
