Genomic selection can help improve dairy cattle populations, but small populations face challenges in choosing the best strategy. By simulating different selection scenarios, researchers found that using genomically tested sires early on increases genetic gain. Faster turnover of sires and higher selection intensity can further boost genetic gain, but at the cost of losing genetic variation. Optimal selection and usage of sires can increase conversion efficiency, leading to sustainable genetic improvement in small cattle populations.
