Coastline communities in Nigeria face high water pollution risk.
Water quality in Eastern Obolo coastline communities of Nigeria was assessed using pollution indices. The study analyzed 48 water samples from 12 communities over a year. Results showed high levels of acidification and turbidity in surface water during the wet season. Dissolved oxygen levels were generally low, and heavy metals like lead, iron, and cadmium were found in some samples. More than half of the water was unsafe for drinking based on the Water Quality Index. Heavy metal pollution was low in most samples, but total pollution index indicated high pollution levels. Urban and semi-urban areas were more polluted than rural areas, likely due to urbanization and industrialization.
