Urban Green Spaces Proven to Slash Stormwater Runoff and Pollution
Urban areas are causing changes in land cover that lead to more runoff and pollution. Scientists studied three types of stormwater management practices in Iowa to see how well they work. They found that bioretention cells and wooded buffers help reduce runoff and improve water quality. However, the size of bioretention cells needs to be adjusted, and adding compost to reconstructed prairie areas can make them more effective. Overall, using these practices in urban areas can help reduce stormwater runoff and make the water cleaner.
