Ploughing deeper saves fuel and boosts tractor performance, study finds.
The study looked at how different factors affect fuel consumption and tractor performance during ploughing. They tested a tractor in sandy loam soil with different plough types, depths, and speeds. The results showed that using a disc plough increased fuel consumption by 5% compared to a moldboard plough. Fuel consumption decreased by 8% when the tractor speed was increased to 7 km/h. Increasing ploughing depth from 15 to 20 cm reduced fuel consumption by 34%. Operating a moldboard plough required 14% more power than a disc plough. Power requirements were 27% higher at 7 km/h compared to 5 km/h. Increasing ploughing depth from 15 to 20 cm increased power requirements by 1.5%.
