Indian Ocean trade in the Early Historic Period was not just influenced by Roman merchants, but also by a long-standing tradition of trade across South Asia. Excavations in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, show evidence of extensive inter-regional trade before Roman contact. The city played a key role in coordinating the sourcing and finishing of luxury goods for both local use and export. The study focuses on specific ceramic forms to reconstruct trade networks in the Indian Ocean during this period.
