Biochar was tested in laboratory incubations to see if it helps store carbon dioxide in soils. Different types of biochar were used, and oxygen consumption was measured to see how much CO2 was produced. The results showed that biochar does help sequester carbon, but it may reduce the amount of available organic carbon in the soil.
