Glaciers in Siberia melting rapidly, sea levels to rise significantly.
Arctic glaciers in the Suntar-Khayata Mountains of Siberia are losing mass rapidly. From 1951 to 2011, the glaciers lost an average of 0.22 meters of water each year. Most of the glaciers had negative mass balances, with faster loss since 1991 due to increased surface melting. Refreezing of melted ice became less important over time. Future climate scenarios predict a 50% decrease in glacier area by 2100 due to rising temperatures.
