State copyrighting of legal texts harms public access and democracy.
States trying to copyright their laws is a bad idea. It limits access and tries to make money off something that should be free. This article argues that states should not do this because it goes against democracy and fairness. It also shows that putting legal information behind a paywall is not actually cheaper and that public-private partnerships for this are not a good idea. The harm caused by restricting access to the law is real, not just a theoretical concern.
