Researchers analyzed using fuel cell hybrid powertrains in Southern Italian railways. They tested four vehicles on different tracks, calculating power demand based on altitude, speed, and vehicle features. Each track had a suitable powertrain with a fuel cell system and energy storage. The system was validated using experimental data, showing varying H2 consumption (5-160 kg/cycle) and fuel cell efficiency (47-50%) based on energy consumption.
