Revolutionizing onion farming: New irrigation methods boost productivity in Ethiopia
Efficient irrigation methods can improve onion and water productivity in water-limited areas like Tigray, Ethiopia. A two-year study compared different irrigation techniques and schedules for growing onions. The results showed that using basin irrigation with a fixed interval led to higher onion yields and water productivity. This method produced 263.85-281 q/ha of onions and 6.06-6.27 kg/m3 of water productivity. Basin irrigation also resulted in more marketable onion bulbs, increasing profits for farmers. These findings highlight the importance of using effective irrigation methods and scheduling to maximize agricultural productivity in water-scarce regions.
