Climate change increases irrigation needs for winter wheat and summer maize.
The study looked at how climate change affects the amount of water needed to grow winter wheat and summer maize in Henan province. They found that the irrigation requirements for these crops varied from 59.8 to 334.3mm for winter wheat and 14.5 to 131.2mm for summer maize, increasing from south to north. The main factor influencing irrigation needs was rainfall, with both the amount and timing of rainfall playing a significant role. While potential evapotranspiration also had an impact, it was not as strong as rainfall. Overall, the irrigation requirements for these crops fluctuated due to changes in both rainfall and potential evapotranspiration.
