Optimal maize planting density boosts grain yield in Sichuan hilly area.
A study in Sichuan hilly area looked at how different plant densities affect maize growth and yield in wheat and maize intercropping. They found that as plant density increased, individual maize plant size decreased, but overall leaf area and dry matter increased. Grain yield went up with plant density up to a point, then decreased due to fewer kernels per ear and lighter grains. The best planting density for high yield was between 5.25 × 104 and 6 × 104 plants per hectare. To get the most grain, the leaf area index should be between 4.72 and 5.41 at silking stage, and dry matter accumulation should be between 6330.98 and 6898.80 kg per hectare at silking stage, and 16541.33 to 16616.25 kg per hectare at maturity stage.
