Massive 2016 Yangtze River Floods Linked to Human Activities
In 2016, a big flood hit the middle and lower parts of the Yangtze River, the worst since 1999. The flood was caused by heavy rain, tributaries flooding, blockages downstream, changes in river-lake connections, and channel erosion. Scientists studied three river stations and compared them to data from 1996. They found that the flood changed the shape of the river and how water levels relate to the flow of water.
