Groundwater restoration in desert oasis crucial for sustainable water management.
Groundwater in desert oasis areas is being overused due to agriculture, so researchers studied how water recharges in the Ejina Oasis. They found that shallow groundwater mainly comes from local rain and river water, while semi-confined groundwater is a mix of shallow groundwater, lateral groundwater from the river basin, and old water from past climates. The Ecological Water Diversion Project helped restore shallow groundwater levels, but semi-confined groundwater levels still dropped. To manage water resources sustainably, it's important to consider both river water and groundwater sources in the whole basin.
