Revolutionizing industrial fermentation with single-use bioreactors for rapid development
The article evaluates single-use bioreactors for fast development of industrial fermentation processes. The researchers aimed to test if these bioreactors are suitable for microbial fermentation and to determine how to scale up the process effectively. They optimized a bioconversion process in Escherichia coli, increasing the production of a specific compound by 3.3 times. Scaling up from microwell plates to a larger bioreactor increased the compound production by 25 times. The study showed that high oxygen demands are needed during fermentation, with growth taking priority over other cellular activities. This research provides valuable insights into improving industrial fermentation processes using single-use bioreactors.
