Beijing's CO2 emissions surge driven by industrial expansion, but energy efficiency offers hope for reduction.
The study looked at why carbon dioxide emissions from energy use increased in Beijing from 1995 to 2010. They used a fancy method called LMDI to figure out what caused the rise in emissions. They found that bigger industries were the main reason for the increased emissions, while using less energy per activity helped lower emissions. Changing the kinds of industries and how energy is used made only a small difference. Industries cut their carbon emissions a lot, but sectors like services and transportation pumped out more carbon. People in Beijing produced more carbon because there were more of them, and each person used more energy. Their suggestions for the future aim to save energy and reduce carbon emissions in Beijing.
