Forests in Loess Plateau Boost Cooling and Humidity, Transforming Living Environment.
The forest ecosystem in the hilly and gully area of the Loess Plateau helps cool and humidify the region by releasing water vapor. From 1980 to 2015, the forest area increased by 2.25%, mainly from grasslands, farmlands, and deserts. Forests in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces had the best cooling and humidifying effects. The forests absorbed heat and cooled the area by 0.92-1.08℃ per day. The forest's evapotranspiration increased from 1980 to 2010 but decreased in 2015 due to less rainfall. Increasing forest area can help regulate the regional climate.
