Warming Fuels Toxic Algae Outbreaks, Threatening Coastal Communities Worldwide
Coastal waters in China are experiencing more harmful algal blooms due to a combination of warming temperatures and increased nutrient levels. A 45-year study showed that these blooms are happening more frequently and starting earlier each year. The warmer the water gets, the more blooms occur, especially in areas with higher nutrient levels. To prevent a further increase in harmful algal blooms, it is crucial to reduce nutrient pollution in coastal waters.
