New algae species discovered on Ficus leaves in Chinese rainforest.
Two new types of algae were found on Ficus leaves in a rainforest in China. These algae have unique shapes and structures, with a single chloroplast containing a pyrenoid and starch sheaths. They reproduce by splitting into two parts. Genetic analysis shows they belong to a new group called Obliquicauda gen. nov. This discovery adds to our understanding of the diversity of algae in nature.
