Cleaner Briquettes Could Clear China's Skies, Reduce Deadly Pollution
Residential coal burning in China causes air pollution, so scientists made clean briquettes using maize straw and coal. They tested different methods and found that adding alkali agents or sulfur-fixing agents reduced SO2 emissions, but molding the briquettes increased early SO2 emissions. NO emissions decreased with biomass, alkali treatment, or sulfur-fixing agents, but increased with larger biomass particles and molding.
