Sheep Farmers Rejoice: Soybean Lecithin Boosts Fertility in Ram Semen Cryopreservation
The scientists wanted to see if soybean lecithin could replace egg yolk in preserving ram semen effectively. They tested four different methods using milk and tris extenders on semen from healthy rams. After freezing, they found that total movement of sperm was lower in soybean lecithin tris extender, while sperm speed was higher in milk soybean lecithin. The percentage of live sperm was similar in all extenders. When using frozen semen on ewes, lambing rates were better with milk soybean lecithin compared to tris egg yolk, although not significantly. The study concluded that soybean lecithin works in milk extenders, but not in tris extenders for preserving ram semen.
