Urbanization Linked to Rising Temperatures and Increased Energy Consumption.
Urban areas are hotter than rural areas, creating discomfort and increasing energy use for cooling. Scientists studied how land use changes affect this urban heat island effect. They compared energy balance in urban and rural areas to measure temperature increase. Using a model, they looked at a town near a big city in Italy from 2003 to 2008. They found that urbanization leads to higher temperatures due to more solar radiation and less water evaporation.
