New method quickly assesses fire damage in Mont Blanc tunnel.
A method was developed to quickly assess fire damage to the Mont-Blanc Tunnel's concrete shell after a major fire in 1999. By drilling short holes and analyzing the drilling data, researchers could distinguish between undamaged and damaged concrete areas. They conducted 670 drillings over a 2000m tunnel section in six weeks, identifying the depth of burnt concrete and mapping the damages. This mapping helped determine specific repair methods for different zones within the tunnel.
