The article discusses the use of a Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine in Hong Kong's MTR Shatin Central Link project. The goal was to construct tunnels in challenging ground conditions under Wan Chai district. Instead of traditional machines, a combination of Mixshield and Earth Pressure Balance TBMs was used. The Variable Density TBM, capable of using different slurries, was chosen to manage risks due to shallow ground cover.
