Hypersaline lagoon's biodiversity threatened by rising salinity and pollution.
The researchers studied the benthic organisms in Sivash Bay to see how they are affected by changes in salinity. They found that as salinity increased, there was more suspended solids and organic matter in the water. The number of species of benthic organisms did not change much with salinity, but the types of species did. The soft-bottom benthos had fewer species as salinity increased. Chironomid larvae, a type of insect, became more abundant as salinity and suspended solids increased. The benthic organisms in the bay are responding differently to the changes in salinity, with some being more affected than others.
