Soil microbes reveal impact of land use on ecosystem health.
The study looked at how different types of land use affect soil microorganisms in Slovakia. They examined three soil types and three land use types (forest, grassland, cropland) at each site. The researchers found that the impact of land use on microbial biomass and activity varied depending on the soil type. In Chernozem soil, differences were seen in the top 30 cm, while Stagnosol showed no clear trend. N-mineralisation was affected by management practices in Cambisol soil. Catalase activity differed most in Cambisol soil. The richness and diversity of functional groups did not vary significantly with land use. Overall, soil organic matter had the biggest impact on microbial biomass and activity, with different effects in each soil type.
