Telecommunications in Ethiopia is controlled by the government, unlike many other countries where private companies dominate. This chapter explores the history of Ethio-Telecom, Africa's oldest state-owned telecommunications operator, and discusses the ongoing debate about regulating or deregulating the industry. The World Bank and China have played significant roles in the development of Ethiopia's telecommunications infrastructure.
