Upgrading low-quality coal could boost energy access for millions in Indonesia.
Indonesia has a lot of low-quality coal with high water content. To make it better, they upgraded it by making coal briquettes using pressure and heat. They tested different heating temperatures and found that 150°C makes the best quality briquettes. The upgraded coal briquettes have 11.00% water, 46.48% volatile substances, 6.13% ash, 36.39% fixed carbon, and a calorific value of 5.235cal / gr.
