Geothermal energy key player in Dutch Energy Transition.
Geothermal energy can help the Dutch Energy Transition by providing a significant amount of heating demand. However, the variability of off-take over time and the base-load nature of geothermal doublets limit their share in the energy supply. District heating networks play a crucial role in maximizing the contribution of geothermal energy. Large size, standardization, and seasonal heat storage are beneficial for this purpose. Unlike other renewable heat sources, geothermal energy is not suitable for other uses. To achieve emission savings, district heating infrastructure should prioritize the use of geothermal energy where possible.
