Waterfowl hunters' misidentifications may skew wildlife management efforts.
Hunters in Kansas were tested on their ability to identify different types of waterfowl, like Northern Pintail and Lesser Scaup, from photos. Most hunters made mistakes, especially with female Lesser Scaup and Redhead. The more days a hunter spent hunting, the better they were at identifying the birds. This suggests that self-reported data on harvested waterfowl may not always be accurate, which could affect how waterfowl populations are managed. The researchers suggest including photos of different species in harvest reports to improve accuracy.
