Microplastic pollution threatens freshwater ecosystems worldwide, urgent action needed.
Plastic waste is a big problem in our freshwater systems, with tiny pieces called microplastics causing harm to aquatic life. These microplastics come from things like clothing, personal care products, and improper disposal of plastic. They can be found in different concentrations around the world, with some areas having a lot more than others. The most common types of microplastics in freshwater are polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate. Even though microplastics don't break down easily, they can still affect animals living in the water. More research is needed in regions where we don't have much information yet, so we can better understand and reduce the presence of microplastics in our lakes and rivers.
