Aquatic plants offer solution to eutrophication in domestic sewage wastewater.
Aquatic plants can help clean up sewage water by removing excess nitrogen and phosphorus, which can cause water pollution. In this study, researchers tested nine different plant species to see which ones were best at removing these pollutants. They found that Ipomoea aquatica and Salvinia natans were most effective at removing phosphorus in different levels of polluted water. When combined, Salvinia natans and Eleocharis plantagineiformis were good at removing both phosphorus and nitrogen from lightly polluted water. This shows that certain combinations of aquatic plants can be used to clean up eutrophic wastewater effectively.
