Soil degradation threatens global food security and sustainable development.
Soil degradation is a big problem worldwide, with nearly 2 billion hectares of soil degraded. This means about 22 percent of cropland, pasture, forest, and woodland are affected. Soil erosion, chemical deterioration, and physical degradation are the main issues. Human activities like bad farming practices and deforestation make it worse. Degraded soil leads to less food, with around 11.9 to 13.4 percent of global agricultural supply lost in the last 50 years. Soil degradation also causes problems like sedimentation, climate change, and loss of biodiversity. It's important to fight soil degradation to ensure there's enough food and protect the environment for sustainable development.
