Total factor productivity is important for economic growth. A study on China's provinces from 2009-2015 found that China's total factor productivity has been decreasing since 2011. Less developed areas showed higher growth rates in total factor productivity, mainly due to technological progress. However, the impact of technological progress on total factor productivity growth is weakening. To improve economic development, China should focus on enhancing efficiency and promoting self-innovation for technological progress.
