Roughing filters are a cost-effective way to clean up dirty surface water for drinking. Researchers tested three filters with different sizes and flow rates using very dirty water. They found that a flow rate of 1.5 m/hr and a media size of 8-12 mm worked best. The study showed that rapid filtration theory can be used for roughing filters.
