Coastal hunter-gatherers challenge ancient farming origins in South China.
Early coastal peoples in Southeast China did not rely on rice farming as previously thought. Instead, they depended on coastal and maritime resources from around 5000 BC. These mixed-origin foragers occupied coastal zones in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, and possibly Taiwan. They later transitioned to rice agriculture after interacting with migrating farmers from the Yangtze Valley.
