Drip irrigation could save millions of gallons of water for small-scale farmers
Small-scale farmers in Nicaragua tested tools to help them use water more efficiently for growing vegetables. The tools reduced water use by 20%, but farmers still used too much water because they were worried about their crops. This led to 91-139% more water being used than needed. The tools did not significantly improve crop yield or water productivity. The Water Chart was hard to understand, while tensiometers were better liked but did not show how much water to use. It's important to introduce new irrigation methods carefully and provide ongoing support for farmers to use them effectively.
