Submerged plants found to significantly boost water purification efficiency.
The study compared how well five different underwater plants clean up nitrogen and phosphorus from water. They found that Hydrilla verticillata was the best at removing these pollutants, followed by Ceratophyllum demersum and Vallisneria natans. The plants' ability to clean water was more due to working together than just taking up nutrients directly. The more plants there were, the better the water got cleaned.
