A new pumping station was built in northern Italy to provide drinking water. The aquifer there is connected to a river and a lake, forming a balanced system. To understand how much water can be safely pumped, scientists used computer models and field tests to estimate how easily water flows through the ground. By analyzing water levels and temperatures, they found better ways to measure this flow, especially near the lake. This helps ensure that pumping water won't harm the environment.
