Vegetation Succession Slashes Erosion in China's Loess Plateau
Vegetation on slopes in the Loess Plateau of China helps reduce erosion caused by runoff. By studying different plant communities that grew over 1 to 40 years, researchers found that as vegetation matured, erosion decreased significantly. The plants' roots and soil structure played key roles in slowing down runoff and preventing soil loss. The longer the plants grew, the better they were at protecting the soil. This study shows that restoring vegetation on slopes can have a big impact on reducing erosion and improving the environment.
