Inconsistent wind data in cyclone-prone regions may impact urban planning.
Wind characteristics in tropical cyclones can vary due to different measurement conditions, making it challenging for engineers to design buildings in cyclone-prone areas. A new analytical framework was developed to standardize wind data from various observation platforms. By applying this framework to measurements from seven tropical cyclones, it was found that typhoons and hurricanes have distinct wind characteristics. The standardized turbulent wind characteristics were compared with existing recommendations for building design, showing differences between the two types of cyclones.
