Climate and erosion drive granitic weathering, impacting CO2 drawdown.
Granitic weathering profiles can look very different depending on the climate. Some have sharp changes from fresh rock to weathered material, while others show gradual weathering over a larger area. By studying a granitic profile in the Czech Republic, researchers found that weathering rates are influenced by factors like precipitation and erosion. Higher rainfall leads to more weathering, while erosion can expose more rock to weathering processes. Fractured rocks allow water to move more easily, increasing weathering rates. This suggests that climate plays a big role in how rocks break down over time.
