The British business census from 1851 to 1881 collected data on firm sizes. A new dataset called the British Business Census of Entrepreneurs (BBCE) improves on the existing data by filling in gaps and organizing information better. Comparing the BBCE data with the original data shows that the BBCE is more useful for studying firm sizes. It's important to be careful when using the published tables based on the original data.
