The goal was to improve the process of removing lignin from pulp in paper mills using oxygen, without weakening the pulp. By adding a small amount of peroxymonosulfuric acid between two oxygen treatments, the researchers achieved over 70% removal of lignin while maintaining the strength of the final pulp.
