The study looked at how following what others do can sometimes lead to negative outcomes in disaster preparation. They did two experiments with people from the U.S. and Japan, and found that when people already have a negative attitude towards preparing for disasters, seeing others not preparing can actually make them less likely to prepare themselves. This shows that just knowing what others are doing may not always encourage good behavior in preparing for disasters.
