Modifying pig housing and manure management can reduce the environmental impact of European pig production. A study in Denmark used a life cycle assessment to evaluate different scenarios. Anaerobic digestion reduced resource and energy use, as well as global warming potential. Slurry acidification decreased acidification and eutrophication potential. Slurry separation mainly reduced energy use. Improvements in housing factors like insulation and slurry dilution also helped. Both housing and manure management changes can make European pig systems more environmentally friendly.
