Plastic mulch is widely used in agriculture, but it can cause pollution and harm crop growth. Scientists have been looking for alternatives, like biodegradable mulches. Research in Xinjiang found that high levels of plastic mulch in the soil can reduce cotton production and increase salt content. Comparing plastic and biodegradable mulches showed differences in crop production and weed control.
