Unregulated lake discharge pollutes vital river, threatens downstream communities and agriculture
The researchers wanted to see how Lake Beseka affects the water quality of the Awash River in Ethiopia. They collected samples from 2008 to 2017 and tested them for different things like salts, acidity, and other chemicals at four locations. Results showed that the water quality downstream of the Lake got worse from 2013 to 2017. The river's water is declining because of uncontrolled water flow from the Lake. The amount of Lake water mixing with the river each year increased during the study period. If nothing changes, the water quality will keep getting worse, leading to environmental problems in the area. To prevent this, it's important to use affordable technologies to control how much water flows from the Lake into the river.
